The team behind the reading app Omnivore has been recruited by ElevenLabs

Generative AI company ElevenLabs has hired the team behind Omnivore, an open-source read-it-later app. In a blog post, Omnivore co-founders Jackson Harper and Hongbo Wu explained that joining ElevenLabs would provide them with a broader platform to create engaging and accessible experiences for passionate readers.

Harper and Wu assured users that the Omnivore codebase would remain open-source, maintaining its accessibility for developers to continue building and improving the technology. However, they also announced that Omnivore users could export their data until November 16, after which it would be deleted.

Launched in 2021, Omnivore was designed to offer a solution for "people who like text," with features like text highlighting, PDF and offline support, and apps for iOS, Android, and web browsers. It also integrated ElevenLabs' voice generation technology for text-to-speech functionality, which became a popular feature among users.

With the move to ElevenLabs, Harper and Wu are now focusing their efforts on developing ElevenReader, ElevenLabs' own reading app. They have already contributed updates to ElevenReader, which allows users to upload articles, PDFs, and e-books and listen to them in multiple languages and voices, including famous actors like Judy Garland and James Dean.

The team emphasized that their goal at ElevenLabs is to shape the future of accessible reading and listening. ElevenLabs, which raised $80 million earlier this year, is a leader in generating synthetic voices for audiobooks and video dubbing, and it is currently considering a new funding round that could value the company at $3 billion.
